WHY? We run for Alexei Navalny means we run against political terror! Russian opposition leader is in a coma in the Berlin’s Charité hospital since August and faces a long and uncertain road to recovery. It was revealed Navalny was poisoned with a Novichok nerve agent. The same Soviet-developed nerve agent used in the spring of 2018 against Sergei and Yulia Skripal in Salisbury, Wiltshire. Navalny is not the first victim of Putin’s regime. In 2018, the member of Pussy Riot band Petr Verzilov was poisoned in Moscow and was receiving treatment at the same Charité hospital. Another member of the Russian opposition, Vladimir Kara-Murza was poisoned twice but survived. Alexander Litvinenko, Boris Nemtsov, Anna Politkovskaya didn’t.
Political terror is carried out and fueled by the corrupt regime of the Kremlin. If you are engaging for human rights, free elections, or anti-corruption investigations, you will be beaten, put into prison, poisoned, and killed. Kremlin crossed the red line and there cannot be a comeback to the usual international relations of Russia with Germany and the EU. We don’t trust Russian authorities and don’t believe Moscow is able to start a transparent investigative process in Navalny’s case. We appeal to the German government and Brussels to initiate a new chapter of the Russian policy. We need to bring cooperation between journalists, lawyers, and civic activists on the new international level and cooperate intensively to fight corruption, money laundry, and human rights violations in Russia.
So why do we run and not just stay near the embassy? Alexei Navalny is a passionate jogger. He usually goes jogging in every new city he visits. This time, it’s obviously not the case. By the „Run for Navalny“, we want to express solidarity with Alexei, his wife Yulia, his family, friends, and the whole Russian civil society!
