Sunflower Care Initiative Group
Since the beginning of military invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, the life of every disabled, chronically ill and neurodivergent child as well as the life of their caregivers is in danger. Already in 2014, after the beginning of war, many such families were forced to look for shelter, so it is not the first trauma they are experiencing.

Our volunteer group „Sunflower Care” helps such families leave Ukraine if they wish and assists in finding an accommodation that meets their family's needs and relocating there.
What we do:
  • We find barrier-free evacuation options: intensive care transport vehicles, ambulances or disability-friendly transport vehicles, etc.
  • We take care of individual needs in terms of accommodation, nutrition and medicine.
  • We help to find short-term and long-term disability-friendly accommodation in private housing units for each specific family.
  • We help to understand and start using the social and healthcare system in Germany.
  • We help to find assistive aids such as wheelchairs or walkers if that’s needed.
  • We support the families and help them to cope with bureaucratic processes (social welfare office, Immigration Office etc.)
  • We take care of the essential needs of the family: food, clothes, hygiene items, medicines.
Why we do this:
We understand that the collective accommodation (camps) in Germany often does not meet the minimum requirements for the survival of such families. For the disabled, chronically ill and neurodivergent children, this means yet another risk to their life, mental and physical health.
Many such families do not want to be evacuated. They fear that they will not have access to private housing, medical and social assistance, assistive aids, necessary therapies, and even basic foods for their children to eat.

For example, in the collective accommodation, the refugees often cannot cook for themselves. Sometimes there is no possibility of lactose and gluten-free food options.

Unfortunately, the EU social system has barriers for people fleeing from Ukraine. We are looking for solutions that meet families’ needs. We don‘t want disabled, chronically ill, neurodivergent children, teenagers and adults and their caregivers to become an excluded and marginalized group. We want them to have access to the inclusive structures of medicine, care, education and leisure.

Together we can create an accessible support structure based on the needs and concerns of disabled, chronically ill and neurodivergent people.
